Welcome to CanSkate!

If you are in Canskate Stage 5-6 and are interested in figure skating.

Please register on the Canskate Stage 5-6 Figure Skating Session.

CanSkate is a dynamic learn-to-skate program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. Based on Sport Canada’s long term athlete development (LTAD) principles, CanSkate centres on physical literacy and the fundamental skills needed to take part in any ice sport or to skate as a recreational activity.

Who is it for?

For skaters of all ages, children or adults, as well as for those wishing to improve their basic skills whether their focus be for figure skating, hockey, speed skating or just skating for fun. These skaters can skate around the entire ice surface with a glide. They are working on improving their glide forward and backward as well as stopping.

Who teaches it?

Besides having completed one Star 5 Test, have valid First Aid, a clear police screening, complete the Skate Canada Code of Ethics, complete Respect in Sport training and be at least 16 years of age; our coaches have also achieved the following (many coaches will have continued to pursue higher levels of coaching as well);

  • Online CanSkate Pre- course
  • 3 day course including; how to teach and how to deliver the CanSkate program
  • Complete multi- sport training by the province including making ethical decisions, planning a practice, teaching and learning, coaching athletes with a disability

Finally, our CanSkate coaches have to complete mentorship hours with a certified coach, submit their coaching philosophy, goals and skater development philosophy for evaluation. They will then submit two CanSkate lessons via video as well as a practice plan for assessment before becoming certified. Your skater is in good hands! You will also notice Program Assistants on our session. These are skaters in our club who are trained and volunteer their time to assist our younger skaters.

What will you learn?

A complete series of balance, control and agility skills taught in six stages of learning that pertain to hockey, ringette, speed skating and figure skating as well as general recreational skating. CanSkate uses nationally-tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills and developing them faster.

What can you expect?

Action, movement and fun! Lessons are given in a group format with a coach-to-student ratio of a maximum 1:10. Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, upbeat music and a wide variety of activities that create a motivational environment and promote learning. Badges, ribbons and other incentives are used to benchmark skaters’ progress and reward effort and participation.

What do you need to participate?

All you need are skates, a CSA-approved hockey helmet, long pants, mittens, warm sweater or jacket. Feel free to motivate your skater- if they want to wear hockey gloves, a skating skirt- its never too early- whatever makes them feel like they are achieving their skating goals. Dress in layers – it will get warm!

CanSkate Skills Summary:

What is the next step?

You may find as your skater progresses through the CanSkate levels that they develop a passion for figure skating, hockey, speed skating or ringette. The St. Thomas Skating is here to continue to support your child’s development no matter where their passion lies. Figure Skating or Power Skating sessions may be the next best program for your child. Inquire for more info.
