NEW! PARENT/ CHILD SESSION
This new program will teach the PreSkate and CanSkate 1 program with the parent present to assist the skater. Both the child and the parent must register for the program.
Currently, Skate Ontario is prohibiting hands-on assistance between coaches, volunteers and skaters. Since our traditional Pre-CanSkate and Stage 1 Canskate session often relies on physically assisting new and/or young skaters, we cannot safely run this program at this time. Instead, we are offering Skate Ontario’s Parent & Child session.
The Parent & Child session is designed for skaters who require hands-on assistance getting up and maneuvering on the ice. The term “Parent” can include a member of the skater’s household or a member of their social circle.
All participants on a Parent & Child session must be registered with Skate Canada (for safety, insurance and liability purposes). Therefore, the parent who registers with the child must be the only parent that attends each session with the child (no switching from week to week unless there is another adult who registers with Skate Canada at anadditional fee of $46.00). The parent must have a sufficient skating level to be able to support their skater. Parents will be responsible for assisting their skater directly on the ice. Parents must be able to effectively skate on their own and support their skater if necessary. Parents must wear a CSA approved helmet if their own skating level is below Stage 5 or equivalent.
Tips for first time skaters:
- Skaters must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet in CanSkate and CanPowerSkate.
- Make sure your child's skates fit properly and are done up tight enough to support their ankles.
- Try to wear loose fitting clothing. Splash pants are great as they help keep skaters dry.
- Mitts or gloves are a must!
- We use bingo dabbers/ markers on the ice to draw circuits, mazes and demonstrations. Please keep this in mind as although they are typically washable, sometimes skaters get this on their outfits and it doesn't come out.
- For safety reasons, ALL of the doors to the ice surface will remain closed during sessions.
- There may be times when your skater may need to sit or lie on the ice. Be patient, we understand this may be a frustrating process, however we like to encourage the skaters to learn to get up on their own.
